I feel I’m at the stage with my videography where I need to get involved in project where I have the ability to work with and hopefully learn from a team of like minded people who want to make a short film. Trying to make this step however is proving to be particularly tricky, mostly it seems, because I don’t live in London.
YouTube has finally started allowing the display of HD video and I have to say it’s the nicest looking web video I’ve seen yet. I did some experimenting and I had to upload a 16×9 (1280×720) video for it to give the ‘Show in HD’ option. Uploading a 1280×544 video as I normally upload to vimeo or Exposure Room would not kick in the HD option and did not display the video at the correct aspect ratio.
The other nice thing about YouTube is that they encode the video using the .h264 codec which also allows them to deliver the video to mobile devices such as iPhones & iPods. If you visit this site using an iPhone or iPod you’ll still be able to watch the video below.

One thing that has concerned me since starting out in video is the whole thing about using copyrighted music on personal videos. I’ve just been reading a post on the HV20.com forum that explains the use of creative commons music.
The music in my videos plays as much part in conveying emotion and feeling as the footage, in fact the emotion while I’m creating it is mostly driven by the music. I’ve looked for royalty free music in the past and found it very difficult to find music that inspires me. It’s for this reason that I’ve been drawn to using music I know and love.
I recently discovered jamendo who are making creative commons music easier to find and offer a very practical solution to our needs as videographers. As you’ll see in the post there are a few things to look out for but from what I’ve seen so far it looks to be a good way for creative people to share their work and benefit from each others art.
At the bottom of the HV20.com page the author gives a link to a talk by Larry Lessig, a co-founder of the creative commons movement and I highly recommend you watch it as he describes the current situation with copyright law in a very entertaining and interesting way.

The shoot35 guys have recently sent out 5 beta units of their new SGBlade 35mm adapter and the first clips are starting to appear and looking very nice indeed. So far two beta testers are posting results. Both seem to be using Canon XH-A1′s so no results with the EX1 as yet. Apparently Phillip Bloom is one of the testers so I’m looking forward to seeing what his thoughts are about the blades compatability with the EX1 and how it compares to the uber expensive Letus Ultimate.

I’ve posted a page describing an alternative way of using the brevis 35mm adapter with the EX1 without getting the dark edges that can happen when shooting in lower light situations.
