Zoom h4n as a desktop mic
The Zoom H4n audio recorder is loved by DSLR filmmakers worldwide, it’s a low cost device that provides high quality results. But did you know that it can also be used as a desktop mic?
I only discovered this today after accidentally choosing the wrong menu option whilst connecting to the device to my mac to offload some files. When connecting the H4n to a mac (probably the same for PC) the screen displays a message allowing you to choose between STORAGE or AUDIO I/F. Select the later and then choose CONNECT on the next page and the device connects to your system as a USB powered microphone and can be used to record audio directly on your machine.
I used my H4n to record this Premiere Pro tutorial today with the screen capture application ScreenFlow. For some reason the audio doesn’t sound that great once uploaded to vimeo so I’m not really sure if that’s down to the H4n, it sounds better locally.
Go it. You have to connect first the USB cable and then activate the h4n and set to connect. Works under Lion now too. Regards, Michael
Hello,
it seams that it doesn’t work under Lion any more. To bad.

I used and continue using Zoom H4 for my short movies, is it a great sound device, a little complicated to use the first time but the result is awesome
Paul, that is a fantastic discovery. Thank you and thanks for the effort regarding PPro.
